This is a fun painting activity that will get children painting and designing in the style of William Morris!

William Morris was a big supporter of the Arts and Crafts movement so at a time when brightly coloured paints containing chemicals were the latest thing he instead chose to paint his wallpapers with paints made from natural materials sourced from around the world.

In this activity children will create a tile design using motifs and patterns favoured by William Morris. They will then go on to mix their own paints using natural materials (these are made from your own choice of materials but good examples are tea, coffee, herbs and spices) before finally painting their tile using their handmade paints. For those that need additional support there are three templates that are ready to be painted.

This activity includes:

  • Lesson plan
  • William Morris deign sheets
  • templates

This resource is ideal for using as part of a wider William Morris topic, projects about the 1920's, British Art or patterns.
